Specific care to strengthen hair, by Vall Waldrich (Truss)

INTERVIEW VALL WALDRICH

Stylist for 17 years, Vall Waldrich is also a trichologist and make-up artist, and for more than 14 years she has worked as an educator in the professional hair care sector. Graduated from international academies including Pivot Point and Llongueras (in the United States, Mexico and Argentina), she is an expert in hair colorimetry and chemistry and works as an ambassador for Truss in Brazil.

With the arrival of the pandemic, some trends accelerated and some consumers were more willing to try new shades and colours in their hair to make themselves feel better and have a break from routine. We know that professional treatments focusing on hair reconstruction usually require time and don’t come cheap; consequently, people are turning to alternatives that offer natural active ingredients, and those that can be very effective in the recovery and repair of damage in the final products, exactly what the Truss Home Care line offers. In your opinion, what should the consumer pay attention to in the final products, and what paths can they take to treat their damaged hair without resorting to cutting their hair?

The consumer must pay specific attention to the current condition of their hair and its particular characteristics. It is important to ask your trusted hairdresser for guidance before buying the products. Using products from the same product line or laboratory with a complete treatment, as well as shampoo and conditioner (such as a weekly leave-on moisturising mask), with a hair routine recommended by the hairdresser can make all the difference.

Today there is much talk about the most delicate techniques for washing and finishing hair, particularly for those with fragile and brittle hair who should opt for products that treat the hair well during cleaning and conditioning. In your experience, what is the best way to treat hair with these characteristics, and what daily routines do you recommend?

For fragile and brittle hair, I recommend incorporating specific treatment products. For example, at Truss we have product lines that hydrate and nourish the hair using essential oils, or masks that nourish from within, such as the MASK network, which in addition to hydrating, provides the most important proteins and amino acids to prevent breakage, rebuild and strengthen hair.

With routines it is important to understand if the products are balancing and maintaining the balance of the substances that the hair needs already in the basic line, with the shampoo and the conditioner, with active ingredients for the correct cleaning and to fight against dryness, as well as the rest of the elements nourishing and strengthening the hair to avoid a dull and brittle appearance.

One of the biggest concerns of Brazilian consumers is related to the greasiness of their roots, and many people are unsure about caring for an oily scalp. What is your recommendation for this type of hair, and what is the best way to keep your scalp clean and healthy in such cases?

Using a shampoo that can cleanse while respecting the balance of the scalp without the product being too astringent or too moisturising is a critical factor here. The Truss Equilibrium or Therapy lines would be the right choice.

For people with oily hair, it is important to wash it every day and avoid the use of hairdryers or straighteners, as well as components that cushion the head such as helmets, hats and caps. I don’t recommend using conditioners, hydrating masks or finishing products on the roots.

Another widely discussed point is the prevention of hair loss, as well as habits related to hair health in general and growing healthy hair. In your opinion, what factors are directly related to growth, and what do you suggest for those who want to strengthen their hair, prevent hair loss and accelerate growth?

Respect the recovery time of the hair between one chemical process and another. Taking a break from hair treatment programmes is important for hair growth.

Visit your doctor periodically to check if everything is going well with your health in general, combine the use of necessary vitamins and hormones with a balanced and nutritious diet. Drink plenty of fluids to keep your body hydrated, this also helps hair growth and strengthening.

At Truss we use Pharmacy Caps, a multivitamin with biotin and iron, among other supplements, that stimulate and help accelerate hair growth. In addition, you are also need to  take care of your scalp, as well as a consultation with your hair therapist or professional hairdresser.

There are many products available on the market to help maintain shine, improve hydration and softness and also to tame the dreaded frizz. What types of ingredients are recommended for people who want to include hydration maintenance and enhancement products into their hair-care routines?

We recommend using active ingredients that replenish lipids and water, and that enhance shine and softness, guaranteeing a feeling of greater hydration.

Until recently, the influence of age on hair growth was not so well known, so there were no specific treatments available. Thanks to market developments, brands are now starting to move towards treatments for grey hair and to improve scalp health in older consumers. What type of ingredients or treatments can you recommend to people over 50 to keep their hair healthy?

For this age group, keratinocyte cells increase production, hair begins to receive more proteins and therefore the melanocytes stop producing melanin, so they automatically become harder.

For this reason, I would suggest essential oils and products that restore softness, nutrition and shine, and I like to recommend hyaluronic acid (like the one is our Perfect line range), which for me is an excellent anti-aging product. But everything depends on individual case history, the chemical history of the hair, and the client’s habits, so a thorough assessment is required for optimal treatment.
