Reishi mushroom: traditional use and scientific relevance

In the sphere of traditional medicine, the reishi mushroom has been utilized for a broad range of applications. It was most notably employed to support the immune system, alleviate fatigue, and promote a sense of well-being. Its traditional status as a symbol of health and longevity is deeply ingrained in cultural history, where it was often reserved for emperors and the elite.

The wisdom of these ancient practices has provided a compelling foundation for modern scientific inquiry, prompting researchers to investigate the underlying mechanisms behind these traditional uses.

Beyond traditional medicine: modern scientific interest

Modern pharmacology and cosmetic science have increasingly turned their attention to natural ingredients with a rich history of use. The reishi mushroom is a prime example of this trend. Scientific interest has focused on isolating and characterizing its bioactive compounds, such as polysaccharides and triterpenes, to understand their specific biological activities, including their antioxidant effect, immune-boosting, and anti-aging properties. This rigorous approach seeks to validate the traditional claims through a methodical and evidence-based framework.

The goal is to move beyond anecdotal evidence and establish a scientific basis for its applications, particularly in the realm of dermatological health and anti-aging. This investigation is critical for developing cosmetic products that are not only inspired by nature but also underpinned by scientific rigor.

Ganoderma lucidum skin benefits: visible effects on firmness and glow

The benefits of Ganoderma lucidum for skin are directly linked to its rich array of  bioactive and antioxidant compounds. These compounds exert multiple effects that address key aspects of skin aging and health, leading to tangible improvements in skin texture, firmness, and radiance. The mushroom’s influence on the skin is multifaceted, targeting processes that contribute to a youthful and healthy appearance.

Anti-inflammatory effects for calmer skin

Inflammation is a significant contributor to the signs of skin aging and various chronic skin conditions. It can lead to a breakdown of collagen and elastin, as well as an increase in skin redness and irritation.

The triterpenes found in Ganoderma lucidum possess considerable anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that these compounds can modulate key inflammatory pathways, such as the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways, thereby suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6 (Source). This action helps to calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and foster a more balanced and uniform complexion. A reduction in chronic inflammation supports the skin’s long-term health and mitigates the destructive processes that contribute to premature aging (Ekiz et al., 2023).

Antioxidant properties: fighting oxidative stress

Oxidative stress, induced by environmental factors like UV radiation and pollution, is a primary driver of premature skin aging. Free radicals generated by these stressors damage cellular components, including DNA, proteins, and lipids, leading to a loss of skin elasticity and the formation of fine lines.

The reishi mushroom is a remarkable source of antioxidants effects, including polysaccharides like beta glucans and phenolic compounds. These substances work to neutralize free radicals, thereby protecting skin cells from damage. The scavenging of these harmful molecules helps to preserve the integrity of the extracellular matrix and maintain a luminous, youthful glow. This protective effect is a cornerstone of the mushroom’s anti-aging capabilities (Nandal et al., 2023).

Fibroblast interactions: impact on collagen, elastin and extracellular matrix

The structural integrity of the skin is maintained by a complex network of proteins and other molecules collectively known as the extracellular matrix (ECM). The principal components of the ECM are synthesized by fibroblasts, the primary cells of the dermis. With age, the activity of these fibroblasts diminishes, leading to a decline in the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. This reduction results in visible signs of aging, such as sagging, loss of firmness, and fine lines.

Research indicates that Ganoderma lucidum extracts can influence fibroblast activity, stimulating the synthesis of these vital ECM components. This stimulation helps to restore the skin’s density and firmness, providing a structural foundation for a more youthful appearance.

Dermatological mechanisms of action of Ganoderma lucidum

The dermatological efficacy of Ganoderma lucidum is a result of a complex interplay of its bioactive components and their influence on cellular processes. Its mechanisms extend beyond simple antioxidant or anti-inflammatory actions to a more fundamental level of cellular communication and synthesis. The mushroom’s polysaccharides and triterpenes act as signaling molecules, engaging with skin cells to promote a state of health and regeneration.

One of the key mechanisms is the modulation of tyrosinase activity, a critical enzyme in the synthesis of melanin. Excessive tyrosinase activity can lead to hyperpigmentation, resulting in an uneven skin tone. Studies have shown that reishi extracts can inhibit this enzyme, thereby contributing to a brighter and more uniform complexion. The mushroom’s compounds also support the skin barrier, a crucial function for maintaining hydration and protecting against external aggressors (Chien et al., 2008).

IFSCC presentations Provital: new developments in skin firmness and elasticity

The decline of skin firmness and elasticity is a hallmark of the aging process, influenced by a multitude of factors including genetics, lifestyle, and environmental exposure. The structural changes within the skin, such as the degradation of collagen and elastin fibers, are directly responsible for the visible signs of skin laxity and sagging.

Ganoderma lucidum offers a comprehensive approach to addressing these concerns by targeting the very proteins that provide the skin with its structural support. The mushroom’s extract has been shown to simulate and not only increase the synthesis of collagen and elastin but also to improve the organization of these fibers within the dermal matrix.

Polysaccharides and triterpenes: key compounds for elasticity with Provital

The synergy between polysaccharides and triterpenes in Ganoderma lucidum is central to its effect on skin elasticity. The polysaccharides, particularly beta glucans, are known for their exceptional ability to hydrate the skin and modulate the immune response, creating an optimal environment for cellular function. The triterpenes complement this action by reducing inflammation, which can otherwise impede collagen synthesis.

Provital’s R+D team has leveraged this synergy to develop a highly effective extract. Our work focused on isolating and concentrating these key compounds to maximize their impact on skin firmness, anti-aging performance and elasticity.

Provital’s research was recently featured at the 35rd IFSCC Congress 2025 in Cannes, France, a premier event for cosmetic science innovation. The abstract, titled “Ganoderma lucidum extract enhances skin firmness and collagen organization”, detailed the findings of our study on a proprietary reishi extract (RE). The research demonstrated that the extract had a pronounced effect on dermal fibroblasts.

The findings of the scientific study collectively suggest that the reishi extract provides a remarkable skin firming effect. This is attributed not only to its antioxidant capacity and increased synthesis of structural proteins but also to its influence on the spatial organization of collagen fibers.

Therefore, the study provides a compelling case for the extract’s ability to influence the architecture of the dermis, thereby increasing dermal tension and imparting a noticeable firming effect. This research represents a significant advancement in the understanding and application of Ganoderma lucidum in sophisticated skincare formulations.

Integration in skin care lines with proven efficacy

The compelling results from our innovation presented at IFSCC underscore the potential of Ganoderma lucidum extract as a highly effective ingredient for skin care products. Formulators can confidently integrate this extract into a wide range of anti-aging and firming formulations, including serums, creams, and lotions.

The scientific validation provides a strong foundation for marketing claims, assuring both brand partners and consumers of its proven efficacy. By choosing ingredients like reishi extract, which is backed by rigorous research, companies can deliver products that truly make a difference in addressing the visible signs of skin aging and promoting skin health.
